Spean Lodge

Nestled amidst the majestic landscape, sits Spean Lodge with its colourful history

Here, where the River Spean slips beneath Thomas Telford’s stone arched bridge, our house has stood for over two hundred years — a Georgian home enlarged through the Victorian age, watching the water and the mountains in quiet company. By day it is a haven for travellers: Ben Nevis rises proudly on the doorstep for those who seek the thrill of its heights, the trails of the Nevis Range, or the hush of winter snow, while gentler souls wander the glens and return to unwind within these old walls.

From the 1870s until the early 1980s, the Lodge belonged to four generations of the Davy family. George Baynton Davy and his wife Martha raised their six children here, in a household once kept by fourteen staff — butlers, gardeners, and governesses whose footsteps have long since faded, though something of their world still lingers in these rooms.

Our two-acre garden, first laid out by a gardener from Kew, still flourishes with redwood, cedar, copper beech, and Douglas fir, drawing the local wildlife much as it must have done in the Davys’ day. Below, a small archive of photographs from around 1890–1900 offers a glimpse of the family and friends who once called Spean Lodge home.

What our guests say

“Absolutely enchanting Highland Lodge. We stayed for two nights whilst walking the East Highland Way and the quality of the accommodation and the public rooms was superb and comfortable. Paul and his team were the very best of hosts and could not have been more welcoming and hospitable. We both intend to go back as soon as possible to this perfect ‘home from home.’”

“Absolutely incredible experience! The location is fantastic, the house is stunning, and parking was easy — but what truly made this stay unforgettable were the hosts. I’ve stayed in over 400 hotels and lodges, and written plenty of reviews, but I’ve never encountered this level of care and hospitality. It was genuinely extraordinary. Thank you!”

“We recently stayed at a charming place and we couldn’t have been more delighted with our experience. From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel incredibly welcome. The house itself is beautifully decorated with traditional charm. Our room was both cosy and stylish, offering a perfect retreat after a day of exploring, and the bed was exceptionally comfortable. Breakfast was a true highlight, reminiscent of a delicious home-cooked meal — we enjoyed every bite. Overall, our stay was fantastic, and we highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a delightful and comfortable stay.”
